Chapter 8

JADA

I feel stifled to the point of suffocation in my parents’ home, and this is not a good thing when you’re sitting at the dinner table trying to enjoy a holiday meal. If it were just my mother and me, I might be able to embrace a modicum of normalcy, but the Senator’s presence irks the living hell out of me. Sure, he helped Keisha and me by putting us in touch with Tristan to get KSR up and running, but he’s done so much other shit, I can’t give him a pass based on that one favor he called in. Sue me.

The only sound for the past five minutes has been the clink of our silverware against the china. Tension is so thick in the air, that I take the final swig of my wine from my glass hoping it will wash some of it away—at least that big-assed chunk of it that’s choking me. I top my glass off again, and my father even takes issue with that.

“What’s that? Your fourth glass of wine, young lady?” he says and plasters on that smile he graces his constituents with on a regular basis. I am not fooled, and I glory in seeing my response wipe it off his face.

“Father, I am over twenty-one, prohibition ended in 1933, and drinking is legal in all fifty states.” My mother could turn a full bottle up to her lips and he never says anything to her. I think he hopes she’ll drink herself into a stupor one day and overdose on some of her many prescription medications.

“That doesn’t mean my daughter needs to single-handedly fund the wine industry.”

“Gerald, Jada’s a responsible drinker,” Mama chides, swirling her own wine glass. “Besides, it’s Christmas.”

“Of course, you’d love it if she’d follow in your footsteps, wouldn’t you, Lorelai?” he snaps.

Mother flinches as if she’s been slapped.

This is a first. The senator has actually addressed the elephant in the room in his daughter’s presence. Cue mother bursting into tears and storming out of the room. Mother hates confrontation. She also doesn’t know that I know about her ‘problem.’ She’s taken extended spa vacations since we learned that my father’s many indiscretions had yielded him a son. I know these are all failed rehab admissions, but I spare her some dignity and pretend I don’t know it.

“Way to go, Dad,” I say and hold my glass up to him in a toast. He leaves his half-eaten meal on the table with my mother’s remaining meal. I drain my wine glass before I clear the table and put the leftovers away. Lenora is actually having Christmas with her family, so I take solace in the therapeutic act of washing dishes. I smile knowing Keisha would rag me about it. I manage not to break anything despite my copious consumption of wine at dinner.

Once done in the kitchen, I retire to my room to call Nate. When he doesn’t answer, I figure he’s still at his father’s home
